Content Management
Once upon a time, all webpages had to be coded in html on a basic text editor. After a while, graphic editors like Frontpage and Dreamweaver were introduced, and website management became easier. The ability to include content across pages (Menu, Header, Footer, etc) made this even easier, and templating engines made it even easier again.
Content Management Systems (CMS) are the latest stage in website management technology. Systems like Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, Umbraco, and CMS Made Simple separate out the content portion of each page from the navigation menu, the template (header, footer, layout), and the stylesheets. These systems also build in user management and permissions, change tracking, contact forms, news/blogs, and more. WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors have made it so that managing the content portion of a webpage is almost as easy as typing an email or Word document. Perhaps the best part is that it can all be accessed online, so a site can be edited from any computer, at any time of day, without having to worry about who has the latest version saved, etc.
At Technology From Mars, we recommend that every site be run by a content management system.
Do you want to edit any of your text, but not have to worry about it changing the layout or look of the page? Our CMS can do that.
Do you want to be able to create news stories and blog posts, but not change any other pages? Our CMS can do that.
